Migration Checklist

Smooth migration requires a good plan. A typical migration plan includes the following set of tasks:
  • Migration Assessment
  • Hardware and Software Set Up
  • External Application(s) Conversion
  • Stress Test
  • Going Live Assessment
  • Going Live Check List
  • Maintenance Check List

Migration Assessment

  • Which version to upgrade to.
  • Potential problems: compatibility issues, deprecated functionalities
    and feature and behavior changes.
  • Type of database and the existing database issues.
    Database consistency.
  • Current hardware support for database snapshot.
  • Assess the existing hardware and decide if a new hardware is needed.
  • Inventory of the current production system, what need to be moved:
    job schedules, stored procedures, outside processes, user logins, etc
  • Client software upgrades
    (sp_OAxxx and other non compatible procedures, CLR).
  • Check external schedulers and dependencies.
  • Plan for testing the upgrade process and applications.
    Test environment availability.
  • Identify backward-compatibility issues and workarounds or fixes.
  • Evaluate in-house and external resources.
